Landscapes of Energy

Summer School

Location: Critical Concrete – Social & Sustainable Architecture Porto, Portugal
Date: 16-20 August, 2017

Urban studies usually place a strong analytical focus on cities. Although cities are important sites to investigate how infrastructures sustain the material flows of capital, people and goods, such studies fall short of explaining how cities are highly dependent on the abstraction of natural resources and transformation of distant landscapes to support contemporary urban life. Through a series of lectures, CUW is invited to explore with the students the role that energy infrastructures play in transforming distant hinterlands, and how our everyday consumption patters are involved in these transformations. Ethical and political perspectives are introduced into a topic that appears to be very technical.
